First Aid On Burn Wound

Everyone has burned their hand at some point and wondered what the best first-aids burn treatment really is. Some people think that rubbing butter on the burn will help, while others insist that cool water is the key to healing. If you’re faced with a situation in which someone has been burned, do you know the basics of first aid burn?

Evaluate the Burn

There are several different types of burns, each with their own specific treatment courses. By learning about these types, you can help provide the patient with the best care possible, while also stopping the burn’s damage.

• First degree burn – The skin is red and warm to the touch. It is painful, but not excruciating.
• Second degree burn – The skin has blisters on it.
• Third degree burn – There is no pain sometimes if there is extensive nerve damage or it may be very painful with white or black tissue.

Obviously, first degree burns are the most common and also the easiest to treat with first aid burn treatment. You can run cool water over the affected area and then use ice on and off to help with the pain.

Second degree burns are trickier, as they are more painful. While the first aid burn treatment is the same, you need to also make sure that the blisters aren’t popped as this can increase the risk of infection. Also, if the burns are on a large portion of the body, it’s best to let a doctor handle the treatment.

In the case of third degree burns, these patients should be rushed to the hospital immediately.

Treating the Burn

There are certain things in first aid burn treatment that you should never do. First of all, adding anything that is oily or thick to the burn’s surface can actually cause the burn to hurt worse. What you’re doing is sealing in the heat. For larger burns, this might not be the best choice as it can be very uncomfortable for the patient.

At the same time, you will want to use an antibacterial ointment as this will help to prevent infection. Use a thin layer on the surface of the burn and cover with a gauze pad. Try not to seal in the burn too well as you want the heat to be able to dissipate from the burn itself.

Another thing to keep in mind with first-aids is that the burn itself is drawing water away from the affected area. In order to restore the water, try to drink more water after you receive a burn. This will help the body restore the normal temperature to the area.

Choices Available in Prostate Cancer Treatment

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer found in men, affecting up to one in every six males in the population. The risk is highest for men over the age of 65, African American males, and those who have a family history of the disease. The good news is that with year screenings and appropriate prostate cancer treatment, the cure rate for the disease is well over 90% when the cancer is detected in the treatable stage. This is the case more often than not, since prostate cancer also tends to be a slow-moving disease most of the time. The key is in getting annual screenings by the age of 50, and seeking prostate cancer treatment right away if the disease is indeed diagnosed.

Surgical Options

For many men, surgery will be the first step in prostate cancer treatment. The type of surgery that your doctor recommends will be determined by whether the cancer has spread outside of the prostate and how aggressive the cancer is. In many cases, your doctor can now perform prostate removal through a laparoscopic procedure. The advantages to this type of surgery as opposed to the traditional surgical procedure are many, and can include a shorter hospital stay, less bleeding during the surgery and less pain afterward. If surgery is in your future as a part of your prostate cancer treatment, it is a good idea to talk to your doctor about which surgical procedure will be the best for you.

Radiation

Another possible prostate cancer treatment to consider is radiation therapy. This treatment is generally conducted five days a week for about eight or nine weeks. You will receive the treatment at a facility with an x-ray technician who will direct radiation at the cancer location with the use of a radiation machine. There are some side effects to radiation therapy, and most will be mild and disappear within a few weeks after completing the treatment. However, there is the possibility of more severe side effects from this type of prostate cancer treatment, including erectile dysfunction and urinary tract complications. Because of this, it is important to weigh all of your options in prostate cancer treatment before making a decision about radiation therapy.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is the prostate cancer treatment of choice in cases where the disease is advanced or has not responded well to other forms of treatment. With chemotherapy, cancer-killing drugs are given to the patient intravenously in a series of cycles that will usually continue anywhere from three to six months. Chemotherapy is a strong drug that carries with it many unpleasant side effects, which is why it is usually given at the end of treatment.

Prostate cancer can be a scary diagnosis for any patient. Fortunately, there are many good options in prostate cancer treatment to help someone who is diagnosed with the disease beat the illness and live a long, healthy life.

Hypothyroidism In Dogs

There are certain diseases that dog’s can have during their lives that can cause many issues in their overall health. With hypothyroidism in dogs their endocrine system tends to suffer the most. The endocrine system regulates things like temperature, weight, memory, muscles, and a few other things. We are going to explore the symptoms of hypothyroid disorder in dogs including symptoms, causes, and treatment to help dog owners to better understand what their dog may be going through.

Most dog breeds have certain [spin]innate|inherited[spin] health problems associated with that specific breed. Be on the lookout for skin tumors, heart murmurs, digestive problems, hypothyroidism (sluggish thyroid gland which can result in weight gain), progressive axonopathy (debilitating disease of the nervous system, becoming rare), canine hip dysplasia (genetic based looseness in the hip joint that can lead to arthritis pain and lameness) and cornea ulcers. White boxers can be deaf. This disease list is an informative guideline only. Other diseases may also be significant threats, please contact your veterinarian for a complete list.

Canine hypothyroidism is the condition that results from break down of the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland produces insufficient quantity of the thyroid hormone called as thyroxin. This situation is also developed from the pituitary deficiency, but it is generally due to some abnormality in thyroid gland by birth (called as congenital/deformity) anomaly.

The dog breeds that are most commonly affected by hypothyroid include Labradors, Golden Retrievers, Dachshunds, Cocker Spaniels, Boxers, Doberman Pinschers, and Greyhounds. In some cases these breeds may be affected by the counterpart, which is hyperthyroidism. You should also know there are two types of hypothyroid disorder in dogs. First autoimmune thyroiditis is where the immune system actually attacks the thyroid gland; in the other case you have lymphocytic thyroiditis which is where the gland fails to produce enough of the thyroid hormone to regulate the body. You will find that in each case the symptoms and treatment will be the same. Treating hypothyroidism.

Symptoms of hypothyroid disorder can be a little difficult to diagnose by the unsuspecting owner as there are several reasons some of these symptoms may occur. The first in the short list of symptoms is hair and skin changes. You will start to notice that your dog is shedding more. There are inadequate levels of thyroid hormone for hair to grow which means it will begin to grow sporadically over the body and they will lose hair. Most areas that are affected by this hair loss are the legs, and back.

The most common treatment for hypothyroid is a medication that will synthesize the actual thyroid hormone the dog is not producing. The vet will have to work with the dosage until they get it on the proper level, but the dog can live a relatively normal life by taking the medication every day. In some cases medication for a few months may be enough to help regulate the thyroid into producing the hormone again, but most dogs will be on medication for life. They should be tested every six months to make sure the thyroid levels have not changed or if they have to change medication appropriately.

Gene Therapy Breakthrough for Chemo-Radiation Resistant Esophageal Cancer

Scientists from the Chiba University Graduate School of Medicine have made a landmark discovery of the efficacy of gene transfer therapy on esophageal cancer patients- with results indicatings that this treatment method is effective in combating the chemo-radiation resistant cancer cells in patients suffering from esophageal cancer. Tokyo, Japan; Melbourne, Australia (PRWEB) March 17, 2006 — Scientists from the Chiba University Graduate School of Medicine have made a landmark discovery of the efficacy of gene transfer therapy on esophageal cancer patients. The researchers unveil their findings in a study entitled “A Phase I/II Adenoviral p53 Gene Therapy for Chemoradiation Resistant Advanced Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma”, in the latest issue of Cancer Science journal. Published by Blackwell Publishing, in partnership with the Japanese Cancer Association; the study looks at the feasibility, safety, biologic activity and therapeutic efficacy of this method of gene transfer in patients suffering from chemoradiation resistant advanced esophageal cancer. Noted Dr. Hideaki Shimada, co-author of the article and a key player in this research exercise, “This was the first clinical experience in the world to evaluate the safety and efficacy of p53 gene therapy for esophageal carcinoma”. Researchers administered four-dose levels of Ad5CMV-p53 via intra-tumoral injection on days one and three of a 28-day cycle in eligible patients- up to five cycles; and discovered that multiple administration of the course proved feasible and well tolerated in patients. The PCR analyses done further revealed that this gene transfer and p53 specific transgene expression had resulted in a reduction of esophageal cancer cells, and the activation of downstream genes. Results of this study indicates that intra-tumoral injection of Ad5CMV-p53 is effective in combating the chemo-radiation resistant cancer cells in patients suffering from esophageal squamous cell carcinoma- localising the anti-tumour effects. The study suggests further evaluation of the combination of p53 gene therapy and chemo-radiation therapy for locally advanced esophageal cancer; as a probable method of improving reaction rates in patients.
