Different Types of Impulse Control Disorders…

Everyone gets angry at times and has sudden thoughts of reacting in a manner that they normally wouldn’t. A person could be building a birdhouse and accidentally hit their thumb with the hammer, because of the pain a person might consider throwing the hammer through a window. It’s usually only a thought and we don’t follow through but for people with impulse control disorders this ability is not so easy.

People who have impulse control disorders have extreme difficulty controlling aggressive, sexual, and many other impulses that can be harmful or socially inappropriate. Having the lack of impulse control is found in many disorders for example cognitive disorders, of people suffering psychosis to different personality disorders. Having post-traumatic stress disorder may also hinder somebody ability to control impulses.

Some other specific impulse disorders include kleptomania (impulsive stealing), pyromania (fire setting), and trichotillomania (hair pulling). Those suffering from impulse control disorders constantly act on harmful impulses. They may feel tense and anxious before carrying out their impulse then relieved afterwards. At times they do feel remorse for their actions, but then again, some feel no remorse at all. People that have impulse control disorders that act on rage and violence usually have had this problem their whole life and it is a symptom of personality disorder. They usually come from an abusive childhood where parents were alcoholics, and emotional support was greatly lacking. Physical abuse and violence was the method taught in handling conflict and because of this a person with impulse control disorders have a highly reactive nervous system. Depression and anxiety may often lead to suicidal thoughts after an explosive act of rage. Having the inability to control their impulses leads to dire consequences. People with impulse control disorders usually end up getting into trouble with the law at some point. By losing control and reacting without thinking could cost you more then you realize.
