My dad came home from the doctors and informed me that he was diagnosed with diabetes. He explained what the disease is and how it affects the body . He wanted me to know all about Controlling Diabetes with your diet, Monitoring Blood Sugar, Monitoring Blood Sugar, and how to use paper, or cloth strips for Monitoring Blood Sugar, blood sugar, etc that came with the monitor.
I think my dad was scared that I might get the disease as well . Logically , I informed him, “I don’t want to come off rude dad but this is about you, not me. I’m fine, my sugar is fine. ”
My dad finally broke the horrible news. I am at a higher risk than other kids because my father has the disease. I know about diabetes so I told my dad that he has type1 diabetes and the only type of diabetes that goes from generation is type two and that skips one generation when it goes down the lineage of one’s family . Nevertheless, good ole’ dad persisted my knowledge of diabetes control . Maybe someday I’d know someone with diabetes or be married to someone like that or have a child that’s diabetic. Finally, I conceded . I supposed it wouldn’t be a bad thing to know about Testing glucose and everything that comes along with diabetes . How would I feel if something happened and my father needed help and I had no clue how to help him? So I broke down and told my father that I should learn right along with him .
My father nodded wisely and proceed to tell about his special diet, what he was eating, how he was working out, and how he was keeping fatty and sugary foods out of his diet . My dad never considered eating healthier or working out as a younger guy . He ate what he wanted and whenever he wanted and it all took a toll on him as he grew older.
He used to go to the health club a lot when he was younger, if only just to swim. Eventually, as he grew older , he confessed he’d become sluggish and slothful and his visits to the health club grew fewer and fewer. Eventually he just stopped going, and began eating enough for two people .
Ice cream in the middle of the night? Who cares?
A couple of Mountain Dews to help get through the day? Sure.
An extra helping at dinner? And then another? Then what about that extra sweet cake that Aunt Carly brought over? A few pieces of that won’t hurt How can he resist?
No one was surprised when they heard that he had diabetes . What it simply came to was the fact that he hadn’t taken care of himself.
Unfortunately that wasn’t the end of him telling me about diabetes , no, sir.
He told me to watch him while he Monitoring Blood Sugar levels in his blood . He punctured his fingertip and dripped blood onto a Strips For Testing. He said Strips For Testing were a good brand, but I didn’t even know there were brands for diabetes Strips For Testing. After pricking himself in the finger he put the thing into the monitor , which told him what his blood sugar level was .
It was all so simple. Now I knew how to do it if I somehow contracted diabetes. In reality , I could do it for my father, which I did sometimes as a favor. After all, regardless of everything else, he is my dad .
