Denmark Is Hosting This Years United Nations Climate Change Conference

With the climate change conference scheduled to run in just a few weeks, I thought I would write about my feelings on the discussions about to take place. I make my living as a realtor, but that doesn’t mean that world issues do not worry me. Climate progression is one special area that attracts me.

The United Nations Climate Change Conference will be hosted in the Denmark capital during the first half of December. Climate Change mitigation is an important issue to be raised by individuals attending the conference. While this problem is on the table, it certainly isn’t the only item up for consideration. With many different opinions it will definitely be a lively debate.

Drastic changes in climate change mitigation were wanted when Barack Obama became president. The puzzle is what this era should look like. The decline of greenhouse gases was the leading feature of the Kyoto protocol and the basis of these types of meetings, but no more.

The reduced emission rates accepted back in 1997 (and never accomplished) are about to be reevaluated. Established on GHG emission rates of 2005, individuals around the US president are looking for a further 20% decline by 2020. While the public call for this reduction they fail to remember that Kyoto didn’t work and that called for a 5% reduction on the 1990 figures. This lax approach toward the minimization schedule is being heavily criticized by some activists – as the mild conditions of Kyoto will effectively be loosened even further.

There is another area of conflict that this problem is linked to. Countries in the South such as Brazil, South Africa and India who are understood to be large polluters are unlikely to be worried by any environmental action taken, but countries in the North could see a massive impact on their economy. When the disputes comes about between North and South, the southern countries think the north owes them as they are disturbed by climate change more. With China emerging as a world power and the economic problems around the world, developing countries such as India and Brazil are not pleased about making sacrifices; though the North acknowledge the need for higher fuel emissions in developing countries.

Another emotional point inside the anti climate change movement is pertaining to the emission trade. While supporters (largely government officials) claim that introducing market rules can offset the negative economic blow of emission restrictions, opponents see it as another chance for black market trade, cheating and scams. What they are wanting to see and calling for is the main of the power and control to be passed to local communities, which should hopefully stop any climatic disasters.

Important decisions may be agreed at Copenhagen, but it’s almost sure they won’t be radical. But maybe more significant is the congregation of activists across the whole society, which can be seen nowadays. This means that there are more and more voices demanding improvements this year, and that can only be a good thing.
