How Groups Work

We are today living in a time of mass-production. It’s very rare, actually it’s almost unheard of, for a person to consume food they have made themselves on their own property. It’s slightly more likely that they will have purchased the food locally. Far more probable is that they’ve bought the food from a supermarket, who have purchased from wholesalers, who have bought from farmers. Those running a Houston contract warehouse or making Houston fulfillmentof orders could have warehouses chock full of all manner of things, all ready to be moved along to the next person on the hierarchy, will be getting employment from this kind of system, and it’s what helps our economy move. But the reality is that doing things this way means many people get paid simply for being on top, and not making anything of their own, it’s for this reason that the global financial crisis has occurred.

This manner of creating things comes from the way any large economic system functions. Once enough individuals are involved in a significant enterprise, someone must be placed at the top, in order to decide who will do what, sounds logical enough at this point. So this person will need to have something in them that means they’re going to be selected to be put in this position. Now, we’d hope it might be their skill in a certain area, or their capability to delegate duties, but the reality is that this person may be simply the person who can get others to like him, who has the most cash, or is seen to be the most influential. This person will now be in a place of power, although they are not always suited to do this job out of all the individuals in the group. Naturally, since they want to keep their place at the top, they’ll try and manipulate the way the group works so that they appear to still be the best choice.

This is the fashion in which many groups tend to work, from social organizations, to work environments to dictatorships to democracies. To take the position of US President as an example, it’s clear that the person who gets into this place is very rarely the person who can most properly care of the country. While George Bush Jr. is an obvious example of this, Obama is also an interesting proof of this system. While he was able to inspire hope and feelings of patriotism within people, and was able to convince many of his ability to alter the way politics works in America, this has been shown to be simply a cover, as his reluctance to create meaningful change in relation to war, health care and the environment makes apparent.

It’s only by acknowledging that this is the way things work that we can start to critique and take down this corrupt system. A true democracy, in which individuals can take control of their lives at a fundamental level, is the only sustainable way to guarantee true freedom for the people of any country.
